Ireland may have come up short against New Zealand over the weekend, but there was certainly no shortage of quality rugby on display with our local teams.
Portadown 1XV kept their league campaign on track with a fantastic 26-5 win over Grosvenor in Chambers Park. The result sees Portadown rise to 4th in the league with 17 points. Just 2 points separate them from local rivals Lurgan, who are on 15 points with 7 games played.
Portadown welcomed a special guest at the pre-match. Former Ulster player David Busby, who now plays with the Seattle Seawolves in the USA, took time out of his busy schedule to present a Seawolves jersey to club president Geoff Caldwell. David, who started his career with Portadown mini-rugby was delighted to be back at his old club for the weekend.
Portadown 2XV also had a good win against Queens, the home side scoring 31 points to Queens 17.
Two fine trys from Jen McCall and Cassie Tennyson was not enough to secure the win for Portadown Senior Women who travelled to play Rainey. A strong home side proved too much for the Blue Birds with the game ending 22-10 in favour of Rainey.
Meanwhile in Lurgan the Senior Women were involved in a titanic battle with Queens 2XV. Eight trys in total and 5 for Hannah McClatchy would normally be enough to win any game, but remarkably it was Queens who held out for the win by the narrowest 44-45 margin.
Lurgan 2XV had an impressive 29-21 win over local rivals Banbridge 4XV in Pollock Park.
Portadown College had an impressive 38-14 win over Antrim Grammar in the Schools Cup. The College were made to work hard for their win against a spirited Antrim Grammar side.
However all eyes will be on Killicomaine Road this Saturday, when Portadown College host local rivals Lurgan College in what is always a fantastic occasion. The 1XV, 2XV and Medallion teams will face off from 10am.
